David Cunliffe happy to hide sex offender’s identity - (and in fact enjoy lunch with them)

“Man up and vow to change the nonsense NZ suppression laws Labour” challenges Ruth Money, Sensible Sentencing Spokesperson.

The NZ Herald reported this week that while on holiday in Queenstown last week David Cunliffe met “with a prominent New Zealander given name suppression on charges of performing an indecent act.”

At that time Mr Cunliffe confirmed to the Herald that “he had arranged for the person – whose case has been the topic of media coverage – to meet a Labour candidate but said he had no idea about the controversial background” and yet today Mr Cunliffe admits that he did in fact know about a ‘suspicion’ regarding this person’s background. “Which is it?” asks Money “and in fact even if there were suspicions is that not enough reason to check before entertaining him over lunch?”

“We find this absolutely disgraceful behaviour” states Ruth Money. “He apologises for being a man, talks about rape culture, and then goes out for lunch and wine with an offender who pled guilty in court to forcing himself onto a woman and got name suppression because of his status.”

“If this case doesn’t highlight what is wrong with the NZ name suppression laws I don’t know what does”, states Money.

“Famous sports people, comedians and lawyers to name a few are all benefiting from our offender friendly name suppression laws while the victims and public continue to be outraged. Name suppression should only be given when the victims wishes it to be, end of story”, says Money who has recently launched http://www.stopthesuppression.co.nz a campaign to pressure for a change in our laws.

“Man up David Cunliffe, and sign this petition” challenges Money “other politicians have”.
