Students encouraged to be brave and never give up

Students encouraged to be brave and never give up if they want to 'make it happen'

Angela Francis, chief executive of the Asthma Foundation, shared her inspiring leadership journey with students at St Catherine's College, Wellington on Wednesday, 23 July as one of the nominated leaders of the 2014 Sir Peter Blake Trust Dream Team.

"I remember when I was at secondary school and wondering exactly what I wanted to do and how I could make it happen; hopefully I have inspired some of these young people to follow their dreams, to be brave and to trust in themselves," said Angela.

Led by New Zealand's Governor-General, Lt. Gen. The Rt. Hon. Sir Jerry Mateparae, the 300-strong Dream Team of leaders shared their stories in classrooms, throughout New Zealand, in a bid to inspire young Kiwis to 'make it happen' - the theme of this year's Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week.

Mary Curran, St Catherine’s School Principal said "Angela encouraged the girls to follow the leadership model that Sir Peter Blake embodied; particularly the six key principles of leadership: courage, commitment, learning and growing, inspire and motivate, lead by example, and honesty. Angela was joined by senior students to share the ways that they live these examples. Overall Angela's message was to never, ever give up."

Discussions are currently underway with St Catherine's to include some work placement training options for students who are keen to work in the not for profit sector.

Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, Shelley Campbell, says, "The response each year from leaders who are keen to be the involved in the Dream Team is simply amazing. Their passion for the Dream Team programme ensures more than 10,000 Kiwi students will have the opportunity to be inspired by their stories and learn how they can achieve their dreams too."
