ko Punga kei runga, Ko Ruanui kei raro
He manu whakatiriripa i ngā kupu kōrero o taku
reo ohooho, Kō! Kō! Kō!
Ngati Ruanui supports plans for Te Reo Maori
Media Statement 23 July 2014
Te Tumu Whakaae (Chair) of Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui Trust said today his iwi supports Te Matawai, the Maori Affairs Minister’s new Maori language strategy.
Parliament is considering the proposed strategy and a new governance entity. The new entity will include representatives from each of the 7 dialectal regions, Māori language organisations, and the Crown.
Haimona Manuera Jnr said having dialectal uniqueness recognised and represented in the new body is a positive move forward for iwi like Ngati Ruanui.
“The Taranaki region is well known for its distinctive dialect of te reo Maori, but even within the region the various iwi of Taranaki have subtle differences of their own,” Mr Maruera said
To have some input and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) over decisions made on fostering and developing our own dialect can only be a good thing.”
