Flockton basin residents deserve fairness
It is blindingly obvious that the land in the Flockton basin has dropped because of the earthquake causing increased flooding and flood vulnerability says Labour’s Christchurch Central Candidate Tony Milne.
The Earthquake Commission has told residents in the Flockton basin that their land does not meet the criteria for increase flood risk.
"Technical reports show it. Council acknowledge it. Spend a few hours speaking to the residents and they will tell you that they never flooded before the quakes - and certainly not 13 times in three years as has happened post-earthquake.
“The thresholds proposed by EQC as a test of when a property is subject to increased flood vulnerability are arbitrary, irrational, and are excluding properties which have suffered land damage through increased flood vulnerability.
"Labour will, if needed, amend the law to make it clear that EQC must pay for earthquake damage in the form of land subsidence or other geological changes.
"The government, through EQC, must pay its share to help the families who are suffering flooding due to the earthquakes,” Tony Milne says.
