20-year age gap revealed between general electorate populations
24 June 2014
The median age of people living in the Coromandel and Otaki electorates (47.9 years) is 20 years older than that of people in Mangere (27.9 years), according to the latest 2013 Census figures released by Statistics New Zealand today.
As well as showing the age, ethnicity, and education levels within each electorate, 2013 Census electorate tables capture a variety of personal, family, and household information. They show that people in the Ohariu electorate have the highest median personal income, at $42,400, while people in Dunedin North have the lowest, at $19,000.
“Lots of students live in Dunedin North, so this figure isn’t surprising,” General Manager 2013 Census Gareth Meech said.
“It’s interesting to see that both the highest and lowest median household incomes are at the top of the North Island, with Epsom at $130,400 and Northland at $53,400,” Mr Meech said. Median household income here is derived using all people of any age in a household.
Wellington Central is the most highly educated electorate in the country, with 47 percent of people in that electorate having a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) or higher. In Mangere, the figure is 9.5 percent – the lowest in the country.
Census electorate tables show the census usually resident population count within each general electorate across the country, and can be used to get a demographic profile of each electorate. The tables use the 2014 electorate boundaries, which the Electoral Commission released in April 2014. (See 2014 electorate boundaries – key changes.)
Other highlights from the information in the tables include:
• highest proportion of usual residents with Asian ethnicity: Botany (39.7 percent)
• highest proportion of usual residents born in Asia: Mt Roskill (57.9 percent)
• highest proportion of usual residents in households with access to the Internet: Epsom (94.1 percent)
• highest proportion of usual residents in households that own or partly own their dwelling: Waimakariri (64.8 percent).
