Human Rights Commission condemns attack on transgender woman
The Human Rights Commission has condemned a
weekend attack that’s left a young transgender woman
fighting for her life in Wellington Hospital.
“Right now our thoughts are with Anahera and her whanau,” said Human Rights Commissioner Richard Tankersley.
“Her suffering highlights the everyday violence faced by many transgender New Zealanders. Violence remains our country's biggest human rights issue with many New Zealanders under attack simply because of who we are, including because of our gender identity or sexuality”.
Mr Tankersley says it’s important for Kiwis to realise that attacks on transgender people don’t just happen overseas – they happen right here at home.
“Human rights are for all people and realising human rights begins at home. Attacks on transgender people aren't new but we hope that one day they will be part of our history,” said Mr Tankersley.
“For victims of violence we urge you to go to the Police, do not suffer in silence. For bystanders who see a vulnerable person being attacked: do the right thing, don’t be a bystander,” said Mr Tankersley.
