Quake Outcasts welcome Labour promise to red zoned residents
Christchurch, 23 June 2014 - On the 3rd anniversary of the first "red zone" announcement Quake Outcasts welcome Labour's promise to treat all red zoned residents equally- by offering to buy their land and homes for 100 percent of the 2007 rating valuation.
This is in stark contrast to the government's discriminatory and unlawful low-ball offer. Both the High Court and the Court of Appeal ruled last year in favour of the Quake Outcasts and pronounced the government's 50 percent land-only RV offer to be unlawful.
"Labour's latest policy announcement shows common sense and spirit of fairness. It is fair in the sense that all residents are treated equally, and that given any new government will inherit the red zone mess left behind by the National government, a policy that addresses the discrimination issue is a huge step forward." Quake Outcasts Co-spokesperson Ernest Tsao says.
The Supreme Court is due to hold a hearing to determine whether the residential "red zone" was lawfully established on 29th and 30th of July.
