Rethinking Crime & Punishment - Survey: How Do New Zealanders Understand the Better Public Service Crime Reduction Targets and Progress
Results
On the 28th April. Justice Minister Judith Collins announced that the latest Justice sector Better Public Services
results for reducing crime and re-offending, were the best quarterly results since the targets were set. The Better
Public Services (BPS) targets set a goal of a 15 per cent reduction in total crime by June 2017, compared to baseline
figures from June 2011.
The latest Justice sector Better Public Service results showed that the total crime rate has reduced by 14 per cent
between June 2011 and December 2013, that the youth crime rate had dropped by 27 per cent, violent crime was down 10 per
cent and overall re-offending was down by 11.7 per cent.
Rethinking Crime and Punishment has decided to conduct a survey to find out how the public interpret both the Better
Public Services targets, and the progress update.
