The Marshal (Speaker) of the Polish Senate, His Excellency Mr Bogdan Borusewicz MP, is visiting New Zealand as a guest of the New Zealand Parliament from this weekend.
The Marshal, who is travelling with a delegation of three Senators and officials, is looking to learn about New Zealand’s parliamentary system and to discuss foreign affairs issues currently affecting Europe. He also has an interest in New Zealand’s energy policy.
While in Wellington, Marshal Borusewicz will hold talks with the New Zealand’s Speaker, meet with two Select Committees and observe Question Time in the House.
There will also be an opportunity to engage with the local Polish community with a visit to the Dom Polski in Wellington.
New Zealand’s Speaker, Rt Hon David Carter, is pleased to host this visit.
“Visits of this kind serve to strengthen ties between parliaments build knowledge and grow mutual understanding of parliamentary practices and the institution of Parliament. This visit comes at an especially important time for Poland as that country has recently celebrated 25 years of democracy and free elections. 2014 is also a very special year in the relationship between New Zealand and Poland as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the arrival of 734 Polish refugee children following the end of WWII, in Pahiatua later this year.
The visit of the Marshal runs from 21-26 June and Marshal Borusewicz will visit Queenstown, Christchurch and Wellington.
