Young White Ribbon Ambassador demands immediate action
over inquiry findings
White Ribbon Ambassador
Robert Mackay calls on all involved parties to take
immediate action in light of the Glenn Inquiry Report into
Child Abuse and Domestic Violence.
“The findings from this report are not a surprise but hopefully they should be a rude wakeup call to all the agencies mentioned in it – immediate action is needed”.
Mr Mackay, along with members of the Wellington Women Work for Peace, Shakti Wellington and the National Collective of Women’s Refuges organised a vigil in Wellington earlier in the month in response to the ever increasing number of violent deaths of women and children in the country.
“We are experiencing an alarming epidemic and there is simply not enough men either in society or in power taking the issue seriously, says Mr Mackay.
A joint statement by Women’s Refuge and Shakti New Zealand will be presented to the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Hon. Jo Goodhew later this month. Many national organisations have endorsed the statement including UN Women New Zealand, UNICEF New Zealand and the National Network of Stopping Violence.
“The Peoples Report by the Glenn Inquiry has timed nicely with the joint statement Shakti and Women’s Refuge have produced – we dearly hope that the recommendations both within the report and within the statement will now be taken seriously by the government and by the leading agencies who we feel have let down women and children in this country,” said Mr Mackay.
