Bill’s the King for South And West Auckland
Becoming a politician is off the table for now for Bill Urale but he will be at the forefront of political change as
Youth Culture and Pasifika Ambassador for Internet MANA.
Urale, better known as APRA award-winning hip-hop artist King Kapisi, threw his hat into the ring to stand as a
candidate for the Internet Party but decided his skills would be better utilised “on the ground” getting the people of
South and West Auckland actively involved in the political process.
“Politics is not for me right now but political change is. My passion remains strong to have a change in our current
government, so I’ve agreed to get involved as Internet MANA’s Youth Culture and Pasifika Ambassador.
“I’ll be taking the ‘vote Internet MANA’ message to our people and inspiring them to get out and have their say on
September 20.”
Urale will lead a range of events aimed at encouraging South and West Aucklanders to exercise their democratic right
this election year. Both areas have traditionally low levels of voter turnout compared with the rest of the country.
“That’s got to change,” said Urale. “We’ve got to make sure our people have a voice. Nothing will change unless we stand
up and make that voice heard. To get the message across we’ll be out where our people are and putting on events that
will get them interested and involved.
“My crew and I will be organising basketball comps, street dance and other music-based events to engage and empower the
voters of South and West Auckland. Watch this space.”
The Internet Party will announce its list of candidates, headed by leader Laila Harré, as well as the electorates most
will stand in, on Thursday (July 19). MANA will announce its candidates in the coming weeks.
