Statement on the release of The People’s Report from the Glenn Inquiry Women’s Refuge
Women's Refuge acknowledges the courage of all participants who provided their experiences and insights to the Glenn
Inquiry's 'People's Report' released today.
"The themes that come through in this Report echo the day to day stories and frustrations of the women and children we
work with every day, as well of those of our staff," says Women’s Refuge spokesperson Ms Hannifin.
"We agree that the Family Court needs urgent attention. We also support the observation that in New Zealand, domestic
violence and child abuse is normalised and hidden and that until this changes, we will fail to address the huge levels
of violence in our country."
Ms Hannifin says the Report clearly calls for leadership in the family violence sector and an overhaul of the current
systems response to domestic violence and child abuse.
"The People's Report brings to light the real life experiences and insight of victims, perpetrators and those who work
in the field. It supports the call we have been making for several years now that the Government must join the community
to change the way we recognise, respond to and prevent domestic violence and child abuse going forward."
