Hessel Van Wieren chosen for Waitaki
Experienced campaigner Hessel Van Wieren has been chosen as the Democrats for Social Credit Party’s candidate in the Waitaki electorate.
Originally from Christchurch, Hessel is a property maintenance contractor based in Cromwell where he has lived for more than 20 years.
“One of the main reasons I’m standing again for the Democrats for Social Credit Party in the Waitaki seat is to draw attention to the urgent need for government to pay for its increasing demands on local bodies to pay for to water, waste-water, local roading, and the upgrade and repair of this electorate’s bridges. Bridges in CODC are expected to cost between $12m and $21 million depending on how many need to be replaced & how many need to be repaired. These costs are increasing to meet compliance demands by central Government.
“Aligned to this are the Government’s misdirected economic policies which have resulted in massive residential and rural property value increases in much of this electorate. This has placed greater pressure on costs, productivity demands on land, and the environment.
“As the LGNZ has noted, we are heading for critical conflicts unless funding alternatives are explored. I want to make sure the rate and taxpayers get a fair deal. Urgent monetary reforms are needed.”
Hessel’s community involvement includes serving on the local Youth Trust for over 10 years, as well as keeping abreast of local issues.
