Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust elects new Chairman
Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust (TST) has elected environmental advocate and community leader Dylan Tahau to the role of Chairman.
Currently the Environmental Manager for the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, Mr Tahau has held several senior positions within both the public sector and the Tūwharetoa Iwi. He is currently the Independent Chair for Whānau Ora ki Tūwharetoa, and was formerly the Community Engagement Manager for Taupō District Council.
Mr Tahau says he is looking forward to the new challenge and continuing to steer the Tūwharetoa waka forward.
“It’s an exciting time for our Iwi and the Tūwharetoa Settlement Trust.
“We are currently working through the Mana Whenua process relating to the Kaingaroa forests, and negotiating with the Crown on our comprehensive Treaty of Waitangi claim.
“There will be challenges but I’m humbled by this opportunity.
“We have an experienced Board and General Manager, and I am confident as we move into a new phase for TST.
“My focus will be on ensuring TST continues to head in the right direction, and manages and develops our assets for the long-term benefit of our Iwi,” said Mr Tahau.
Mr Tahau takes over following the resignation of former Chairman Rakeipoho Taiaroa. TST Trustees have paid tribute to Mr Taiaroa’s role in re-focusing the Trust.
“Rakei has done a great job of getting TST back on the right track after some tough times for the Trust, and we’re now in a better position to move forward.
“We would also like to acknowledge his whānau who have had to put up with the long hours and commitments that come with being Chair,” said Mr Tahau.
Mr Taiaroa will remain a Trustee and will support Mr Tahau as he transitions into the new role.
TST will hold a Special General Meeting on Saturday, 23 August to report on its current financial position to its beneficiaries.
