Consultation open for place name proposals
The New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa has today opened public consultation on 11 proposals to assign new, or to alter existing, geographic names around the country.
From today, various newspapers throughout the country will include public notice advertisements. The proposals now open for public consultation are:
• Macraes (for
township) – closes 5 September,
2014;
•
• Waikoura (for
locality) – closes 5 September,
2014;
•
• Waikoura Stream –
closes 5 September, 2014;
•
• Tutoko
Basin – closes 11 July,
2014;
•
• Makere Basin –
closes 11 July, 2014;
•
• Stokes Beach
– closes 5 September
2014;
•
• Otūmoetai Beach –
closes 5 September, 2014;
•
• Otūmoetai
(for suburb) – closes 5 September,
2014;
•
• Otūmoetai Pā –
closes 5 September, 2014;
•
• Otūmoetai
Channel – closes 5 September,
2014;
•
• Tindale Creek –
closes 11 July, 2014.
•
Any member of the public
can make a submission either in support of, or objecting to,
these proposals.
Submissions can be made in writing to the Secretary for the New Zealand Geographic Board, via the online forms, or to nzgbsubmissions@linz.govt.nz.
The NZGB further advises that it has:
• Adopted official names for 26 undersea
features;
•
• Assigned or Altered 13 undersea
feature names;
•
• Approved as official 105
recorded names in the Nelson
region;
•
• Discontinued five official
names;
•
• Assigned six Antarctic names;
and
•
• Notified the final determination by the
Minister for Land Information for an island
name.
