Welcome reprieve for world-leading Problem Gambling Foundation
The Public Service Association (PSA)
welcomes the announcement that funding for the Problem
Gambling Foundation has been extended until February
2015.
The PSA represents staff working at the Problem Gambling Foundation across New Zealand.
Richard Wagstaff, PSA National Secretary, said “This funding extension means the Judicial Review into the proposed cut can take place before it is too late.”
“Problem Gambling Foundation staff do world-leading work, and it would be a devastating blow if they lost their jobs due to a funding process that appears flawed at best.
“While treatment is crucial, only prevention and education will see a long term fall in the need for problem gambling services.
“It is a concern that considerable professional experience and knowledge may be lost if former PGF staff are not able to continue working in this area.
“We hope the Ministry of Health takes advantage of this extra time to ensure this crucial voice for problem gamblers is not lost,” said Richard Wagstaff.
