National selects Chris Bishop as Hutt South candidate

The National Party has selected Chris Bishop as its candidate for the Hutt South electorate at the 2014 General Election.

“It’s time for a fresh face for Hutt South. Our communities need a strong voice that will represent us in John Key’s National Party,” said Electorate Chair Peter Salmon.

“I know Chris will run a strong campaign to engage with Hutt South communities over the coming months.”

Mr Bishop said he was honoured to be selected and looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“Those of us from the Hutt know what a great place it is. It’s a fantastic place to bring up a family, to work in, and to have fun in.”

“Lower Hutt is full of friendly, creative, hard-working people who are proud of where they live. It’s where I was born and raised, and I’m passionate about making the Hutt even better,” said Mr Bishop.

“I’ll be working hard to win the support of Hutt South to give our communities a strong new voice.”

Chris Bishop – Biographical Notes
Chris was born and raised in Lower Hutt, attending Eastern Hutt School and Hutt Intermediate. He has worked in both the private and public sector, as well as contributing to the community as President of the New Zealand Schools Debating Council. He was the 2006 Young Wellingtonian of the Year.

Chris holds a first class Honours degree in Law and a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University, and has been admitted to the bar as a Barrister and Solicitor. He is a skilled debater and public speaker, having won ten intervarsity debating tournaments, including at the Cambridge Union and Sydney Union.

Chris worked as a researcher for National in opposition before spending two and a half years working as a Ministerial Advisor to Hon Gerry Brownlee. Between 2011 and 2013 he lived and worked in Auckland as Corporate Affairs Manager for Philip Morris New Zealand, before returning to Parliament to work as a Senior Advisor to Hon Steven Joyce.
