The Taxpayers’ Union is alarmed at Police Minister Anne Tolley’sannouncement this afternoon that she intends to introduce legislation to allow the Police to charge for vetting services. Executive
Director of the Taxpayers’ Union, Jordan Williams, says:
“Last month the Minister was trumpeting a new sex offender register to allow more sharing of information. Now Ms Tolley
is about to make it harder for New Zealanders to do prudent checks of criminal history.”
“This is a tax on people wanting basic information about potential employees and caregivers.”
"If the costs are prohibitive, the Minister should focus on enabling more information to go online, not creating a new
tax on those needing the information."
