New budget funding welcomed but prevention strategy a priority – Human Rights Commission
New funding for existing services to address sexual violence has been welcomed by New Zealand’s Human Rights
Commissioner for Women Jackie Blue who also says Government needs to move ahead with its planned prevention strategy.
Budget 2014 included $10.4 million in new operating funding for support services that address sexual violence over the
next two years.
“This is great news but the reality is that it will only ensure existing services won’t fall over,” said Dr Blue.
“I urge Government to develop and implement the nationwide sexual violence prevention package it has already proposed.
Addressing violence against our women and children is a human rights priority and preventative interventions and
education hold the most promise in reducing violent sexual assault. ”
“While the United Nations commended New Zealand’s high realisation of human rights, their Universal Periodic Review in
January also highlighted priority areas we need to do better in: reducing violence against our women and children was
one of them.”
Dr Blue says everyone has a right to a life free from violence and everyone has a responsibility to ensure this is a
reality for all New Zealanders. Education is a fundamental part of ensuring the human rights of all people are realised.
