Mayor of Christchurch comments on Budget 2014

15 May 2014

The Mayor of Christchurch Lianne Dalziel has welcomed confirmation in the Budget of the recently signed Housing Accord for Christchurch.

The Accord – where the City Council’s role is subject to public consultation - is aimed at helping address the very difficult housing situation in Christchurch.

“It’s good to see the confirmation of the Housing Accord in the Budget, which is part of the commitment the Minister of Housing gave when we signed the Accord.

“The $14 million extra for the work of the Canterbury Social Support Fund is also welcome,” said the Mayor.

The fund supports trauma counselling services, co-ordination and case management for families with multiple problems and for critical community-based social services responding to the Canterbury and Christchurch earthquakes.

“I know that it is the delay in getting their EQC/insurance claim settled which is at the root cause of much of the stress we see in Christchurch.

“However, the increased funding is welcome and will no doubt assist many people who are struggling,” said the Mayor.
