Wellington Girls’ College Rallies for Abducted Nigerian School Girls
On Wednesday 14th May, students and staff of Wellington Girls’ College (WGC) will add their voices to the global
campaign for the rescue of the schoolgirls who were abducted in northeastern Nigeria. WGC students and staff will walk
to Parliament at 12.40p.m. to join the larger rally that will proceed from Civic Square through Mercer Street, Willis
Street and Lambton Quay arriving at Parliament around 1.00pm.
The youth coordinator for the Wellington rally, Dawape Giwa Isekeije, a Yr 13 student at Wellington Girls’ College,
said, “WGC students and staff have been really supportive of this campaign. They have been signing up and preparing to
participate in this rally since last week. We have made display cards with messages we plan to deliver to Parliament on
Wednesday afternoon. My school mates are very eager to come out and show their support for the young schoolgirls.”
Speakers expected to address the rally include, Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, Members of Parliament including David Shearer,
and representatives of Amnesty International and UN Women. The executive director of Change-A-Life Nigeria, Jumoke Giwa
will deliver a statement from the founder, Funmi Iyanda.
Rallies are taking place in Wellington (from 12 noon) and Christchurch (from 4:00pm) and there is an information
assembly at Logan Park High School in Dunedin. We are asking the government of New Zealand to add its voice to the
global call for the Nigerian government to #BringBackOurGirls. We would also like the New Zealand government to offer
assistance to the Nigerian government for the safe rescue of these school girls.
