RNZSPCA supports PM’s ban on ‘legal highs’ animal testing
The Royal New Zealand SPCA congratulates Prime Minister John Key for ruling out animal testing for recreational drugs.
“We’re extremely pleased to hear the Prime Minister’s undertaking this morning to ban animal testing for ‘legal highs’,”
says Ric Odom, CEO of the Royal New Zealand SPCA.
“As New Zealand’s main animal welfare organisation, our position has always been that no animals should be used to test
recreational drugs – so it is heartening to receive firm support for our position from the Prime Minister.
“However, we would also like to sound a note of caution: it may be still possible to get around the Prime Minister’s ban
by importing substances that have already been tested on animals overseas. We encourage the Government to ensure this
potential loophole is closed in any subsequent amendments to the Psychoactive Substances Act.”
