Government Rules Out Animal Testing of Legal Highs
John Key said this morning on TVNZ’s Breakfast that all animal testing of legal highs will be ruled out. This news has come in the lead up to a vote in parliament this week that will change the legislation governing psychoactive substances.
“This is a great moment for all of New Zealand. People from all around the country and from all sectors of society came together to support this move as soon as they became aware of it” said NZ Anti-Vivisection Society spokesperson Stephen Manson. “New Zealanders just knew instinctively that animal testing these drugs was wrong and it’s great the government has confirmed that view for us all.”
“Since 2012 when NZAVS uncovered the details of the testing that was initially planned and passed it on to Green Party MP Mojo Mathers we have seen this issue continue to grow in importance. The Green Party, SAFE, HUHA, the SPCA, the Labour Party and many more organisations and countless individuals have all put a huge amount in to this and will be celebrating today. Common sense and good old fashioned human decency have prevailed.

“We will be watching closely how this is implemented in law. John Key’s statements this morning were clear, he was ruling out animal testing of legal highs. Mojo Mathers has the ideal amendment to do this already drawn up and is taking it to parliament to vote on this week. All the government needs to do is support this and we all look forward to them doing so.
“Our work on this issue hasn’t stopped; we now need a functioning thorough testing regime without animal testing in place so the legislation around legal highs can do the job it is meant to do. We know it can be done and will be doing all we can to ensure this happens.” Mr Manson also said.
