Don’t be a victim to alcohol this long weekend say Police
Jon White, CEO of ANZPAA - the agency that serves Police Commissioners across Australia and New Zealand believes
everyone needs to continue talking about and change the pattern of violence and lasting harm caused by the misuse of
alcohol.
Mr White made these comments today when he announced the eighth police led Operation Unite – a Blitz on Drunken Violence to be held this weekend in participating jurisdictions across Australia and New Zealand (17–21 April 2014).
“The recent media attention and public focus on one punch hits, glassings, thuggery and aggression fuelled by alcohol
highlights the continuing need for police operations like Unite,” says Mr White.
Mr White said Police started the operation in 2009 to show the public their joint commitment to changing the ugly
reality of the misuse of alcohol and alcohol-related crime.
“Each Operation continues to highlight there are too many people who drink to get drunk and cause harm to those around
them and themselves. Police and emergency services staff know only too well what happens when people drink to excess and
want to see people taking more responsibility for their drinking and the flow on impacts,” says Mr White.
“The operation is not about restricting people from having a good time. It is about raising awareness in the community
about risky drinking behaviours. If you are going to drink alcohol then stay within your limit, look after those around
you and definitely do not drink and drive,” says Mr White.
