Emergency Appeal for the People of the Solomon Islands

April 7

Save the Children NZ Launches an Emergency Appeal for the People of the Solomon Islands.

Save the Children New Zealand has launched an emergency appeal in response to the floods that have devastated the Solomon Islands.

21 people are dead and that number is expected to rise as dozens more are missing.

49, 000 people have been displaced and are living in evacuation centres and other makeshift accommodation.

Save the Children will be distributing non-food items such as blankets and tarpaulins from today, and is working with the National Disaster Management Office to make sure aid gets to where it’s needed most.

There are real concerns that children will be badly affected by any outbreak of deadly waterborne diseases and diarrhoea, as people rely on rainwater for drinking.

Although the rain has stopped, getting supplies to the affected areas is problematic as bridges and roads were washed away, in what has been described as the worst natural disaster to ever hit the Solomon Islands.
