Give a lei and have your say!
The Pasifika arm of the CTU, Komiti Pasifika, launches their ‘Lei Your Local’ campaign this week. The purpose of the campaign is to increase Pasifika participation in the 2014 General Election.
“The giving of a lei is equivalent to a Pasifika handshake.” Komiti Pasifika Co-convenor Marion Macneil said.
“Pasifika peoples throughout Aotearoa are encouraged to take part by finding their local MPs (and any known candidates) and presenting them with a lei (flower garland). We want people to take a photo of the MPs (or candidates) wearing their lei and upload these photos to the ‘Lei Your Local’ facebook page.” Macneil said. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lei-Your-Local/597491310347840?fref=ts
“Pasifika peoples make up almost 10% of the NZ population and are an important and significant part of New Zealands culture. Our voices deserve to be heard by politicians.” Macneil said.
“This campaign aims to break down barriers to participation for Pasifika peoples while also providing non-Pasifika MPs and candidates with the opportunity to learn a bit about our culture and values in an engaging way.” Macneil said.
