APP-SOLUTELY AMAZING RESPONSE TO INTERNET PARTY’S CALL FOR MEMBERS
The Internet Party's innovative approach to engaging with interested New Zealanders is getting rapid results, with more than 500 people signing up within seven hours of the party’s call for members.
The Internet Party’s special application and website www.internet.org.nz allow people to join the party as members online – a first for New Zealand. Having gone “live” at midday on Thursday, the target of 500 people signed up was achieved at 7pm on the day and has continued to climb to more than 800 today.
The Internet Party requires a membership of 500 eligible voters – adult citizens and permanent residents – to be registered with the Electoral Commission, with a list of 550 to be submitted.
Internet Party Chief Executive Vikram Kumar
said membership details were now being checked before
submission to the Electoral Commission.
“We’re
working hard to have this done by Monday.”
Kumar said
the Internet Party was thrilled with the response.
“Not
only are we getting great numbers from people wanting to
become members, there’s also been a huge response from
people who want to come onboard as volunteers. That’s a
really powerful sign of how much the Internet Party is
connecting.
“We’ve also had strong interest from
people wanting to join the party as candidates.”
In the
meantime, work is continuing on the Internet Party’s
manifesto and policies, which would be further informed by
members' views and those of the candidates, Kumar
said.
“The Internet Party’s immediate and future direction will be determined in the most part by the people who join as members. We are committed to making sure the views of our people are reflected in our policies and that they are leading the way in taking New Zealand into the digital future.”
