TPPA will make life worse for low-paid workers
"The Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement will not make low-paid workers' lives better," said Service and Food Workers
Union National Secretary John Ryall today.
"“The Service and Food Workers Union is strongly opposed to the TPPA,” he said. “Far from improving the lives of low-
paid workers like our members, there is very good reason to fear that it will make their lives worse.”
The Service and Food Workers Union represents 22,000 workers, who work in low paid jobs such as cleaning, caregiving,
food processing and security.
" Our union shares the concerns of thousands of New Zealanders who will be rallying and marching tomorrow,” said John
Ryall.
John Ryall said the SFWU was particularly concerned about the thousands of New Zealand workers who are dependent on
funding from central and local government.
“Our members need much stronger local and central government procurement policies to ensure they have secure work and a
living wage,” he said. “The TPPA will weaken government’s ability to act in this area. The TPPA is not about the
interests of ordinary hard working New Zealanders, like SFWU members and their families. It is about the interests of
multi-national corporates and their ever-increasing wealth.”
