Problem Gambling Foundation Funding Cut Welcomed

MEDIA RELEASE

Taxpayers’ Union Welcomes Problem Gambling Foundation Funding Cut

21 MARCH 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming the news that the Ministry of Health is to cut funding to the Problem Gambling Foundation in favour of addiction services to be provided by the Salvation Army's 'Oasis' service.

"The fact that the Government’s critics are linking the change of service provider to vocal activism in relation to the SkyCity convention centre shows that the Foundation had turned from a service provider into a taxpayer funded lobby group," says Jordan Williams, Executive Director of the’ Union.

“New Zealanders will be pleased that the Salvation Army is more likely to use the money for service delivery rather than the pet political causes the Problem Gambling Foundation is associated with."

"This decision is long overdue and hopefully a signal that the Government is reviewing these types of faux charities. Far too many non-profits are taking taxpayer funding and using it for political campaigning."

The Taxpayers’ Union does not accept any government funding. Donations can be made at www.taxpayers.org.nz.
