Kick start to forestry sector welcomed
WWF welcomed the announcement today of Labour’s plan for developing New Zealand’s forestry industry.
“A thriving forestry sector is crucial to developing a cleaner, greener New Zealand economy. This policy package will benefit both the environment and the economy, said WWF-New Zealand Head of Campaigns Peter Hardstaff.
The Labour Party’s policy package, seeking an ‘economic upgrade’ for the forestry sector, includes tax incentives for new investment in processing and for research and development; an improved emissions trading scheme; a pro-wood government procurement policy as well as measures to improve health and safety in the industry.
“Kick starting the wood products industry is an important part of enhancing both the green building sector and the future potential of the bio-fuel sector.
“A clean energy future for New Zealand is 100% possible and this package is the type of policy change we need to move us in that direction.
“Unfortunately the current government has no coherent approach for moving us to a cleaner economy or for addressing climate change. It is currently moving us in the wrong direction with its petroleum action plan and its subsidies for fossil fuel extraction.
“It is good to see some alternatives to supporting the fossil fuel industry being put forward.
“The forestry industry has had a difficult time of late with the changing price signals under the Emissions Trading Scheme. It is good to see a proposal that will further develop this important industry and the people that work in it.”
