ELECTION DATE ANNOUNCEMENT AND KEY DATES

The Prime Minister has today announced that the 2014 general election will be held on 20 September 2014. The key dates for the general election are:

2014 GENERAL ELECTION TIMETABLE

Monday 10 MarchPrime Minister announces dates for 2014 general election
Friday 20 JuneRegulated period for election advertising expenses begins
Monday 23 JuneLaunch of enrolment campaign
Thursday 14 August Dissolution of Parliament
Wednesday 20 AugustWrit Day
Governor General issues formal direction to the Electoral Commission to hold the election.
Wednesday 3 SeptemberAdvance and Overseas Voting starts
Friday 19 SeptemberAdvance Voting ends
Last day to enrol for the election.
Friday 19 September
Midnight
Regulated period ends
All election advertising must end and election signs must be taken down
Saturday 20 SeptemberElection Day
Polling places open from 9.00am to 7.00pm.
Election Night
Preliminary results released progressively from 7.00pm onwww.electionresults.govt.nz.
Saturday 4 OctoberOfficial results for general election declared
(including special declaration votes)

A more detailed timetable will be provided in late May.
