Auckland Commemoration for International Women’s Day to be held 7th March
The Auckland Branch of National Council of Women New Zealand (NCWNZ) is working with Auckland Council and Shine Te
Kakano Tumanako on a commemoration of International Women’s Day on Friday 7th March 2014, at Freyberg Square from 12noon
to 2pm.
“On average 14 women lose their lives every year as a result of domestic violence, and we want to draw attention to the
ongoing impact of this issue, which disproportionately affects women and girls,” said Julie Fairey, Auckland Branch
President NCWNZ.
“We are working with domestic violence prevention agency Shine* on this event, focusing on what individuals, families,
communities and local government can do to address both the instances and the causes of domestic violence in Auckland,”
said Fairey. “It is wonderful to have speakers from Shine* talking about how we can work together to make homes violence
free, along with Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse showing Auckland Council’s ongoing commitment to this issue.”
The event will include speakers, stalls and a modest quantity of cake. NCWNZ’s Auckland Branch is the country’s oldest
and largest branch of NCWNZ, and in the case of rain/wind the event will move to nearby Ellen Melville Hall, named for
the founder of the branch.
International Women’s Day has been marked around the world on March 8th since the early 1900s. In some countries it is
