The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) would like to congratulate the three finalists, and all entrants of the 2014
Ahuwhenua Trophy BNZ Māori Excellence in Farming award.
“It’s great to be a major sponsor of a competition that celebrates and encourages Māori farmers who are committed to
pursuing new and innovative approaches,” says MPI’s Deputy Director-General Ben Dalton.
“Māori agribusiness is a major contributor to New Zealand’s primary sector, and the wider New Zealand economy. These
finalists should be proud of their achievements and I’m sure they will go on to be leaders in their sector,” says Mr
Dalton.
The three finalists announced at an event in Parliament last night are:

“Being a finalist in this competition is the pinnacle of Māori excellence in farming. I look forward to the field day
events in March which will showcase each farming operation to judges and members of the public,” says Mr Dalton.
“MPI is proud to be a gold sponsor and on the judging panel for this year’s competition. The Ahuwhenua Trophy provides
an opportunity for Māori farmers to benefit from the robust judging process and in-depth analysis of each farming
operation. This level of feedback has direct and practical benefits, which outside of the competition would be costly.
“The competition also showcases Māori achievement in the Māori dairy farming sector. In particular, it promotes
successful approaches to governance, finance, management and the recognition of nga tikanga Māori in their business
practices,” says Mr Dalton.
The winner of the 2014 Ahuwhenua Trophy will be announced on June 13 2014.
