3 News Poll Reveals Winston Peters Could Be Kingmaker, Danger For John Key and the National Party

The first major political opinion poll of the year shows John Key and the National Party could lose this year’s general election - with Winston Peters as Kingmaker.

3 News Political Editor Patrick Gower says:   "These results suggest this will be one of the most closely fought elections in New Zealand history.  A realistic election night result could see Winston Peter hold the balance of power – and that's exactly why John Key hasn't ruled him out."

The 3 News/Reid Research poll of 1000 people was taken between January 23-29 and has a margin of error of 3.1%.

PARTY RESULTS

NATIONAL - 44.5% (down 1.9%)
CONSERVATIVE - 2.1% (down 0.7%)
MAORI PARTY – 1% (down 0.2%)
ACT - 0% (down 0.8%)
UNITED FUTURE - 0% (down 0.1%)

LABOUR - 33.5% (up 1.3%)
GREENS - 12.4% (up 2%)
MANA - 0.3% (down 1%)

NZ FIRST - 5.7% (up 1.5%)

SEATS IN HOUSE (62 needed to govern)

National - 54
Conservative - 3 (predicted to win an electorate seat)
Maori Party - 2 (predicted to win 2 electorate seats)
Act - 1 (predicted to win an electorate seat)
United Future 1 (predicted to win an electorate seat)
