School stationery, uniforms, basic essential clothing and school trips/camp are out of reach for around 265,000 Kiwi
kids, according to the Child Poverty Monitor Technical Report 2013. With around 180,000 missing out on the things they
need like their own bed, visits to the doctor and having adequate clothing.
The start of the school year can often be one of the most challenging times for families affected by poverty, and as a
consequence, children go without the essentials that keep them included and on an equal playing field with their peers.
Activities or additional support that can assist children to overcome learning or social barriers are often the first
things to go when the household budget is stressed.
Variety’s Kiwi Kid Sponsorship programme works alongside families/caregivers to match them with an individual sponsor
who can help ensure their Kiwi Kids basic needs are met. For as little as $35 a month, sponsors can support an
individual child so they can receive the basics they so desperately need.
Make a difference in the life of one of the 265,000 Kiwi kids growing up in poverty – help them make a good start to the
school year, so they can reach their full potential in life.
Kiwi Kid Sponsorship helps children get a good start to life by covering basic unmet needs like bedding and clothing, prescription costs,
doctor’s bills, and school associated costs.
