SST Welcomes Members Bill

13/01/2014

The Sensible Sentencing Trust (SST) applauds Northland MP, Mike Sabin’s, Members Bill that would allow guardians of young offenders having bail conditions such as alcohol bans and having to reside at a particular address, imposed by the judge.

“This is the first step in making parents and guardians more accountable for their children’s behaviour and criminal activity.” Garth McVicar, Sensible Sentencing Trust CEO says.

SST also supports another bill drafted by Mr Sabin, that proposes a change the law in regard to the ‘right to silence’ in cases where victims are children or mentally impaired.

We need to be standing up for the rights of the vulnerable who often have no voice.” McVicar says.

This proposal would remove many of the current obstacles in police investigations, especially into child deaths.

“We need to be doing everything possible to reduce the number of children being abused and killed in this country, this bill is another step in the right direction,” McVicar adds.
