Candle Light Vigil for
Sarwan Lata Singh and Mei Fan
6:30pm
Wellington Civic
Square
Two Asian migrant women known victims of domestic violence were killed in their own homes in November 2013. Shakti Ethnic Women's Support Group is calling for all concerned public to attend a candle light vigil in honour of deceased Sarwan Lata Singh and Mei Fan.
The event calls to
highlight:
• Ethnic women speaking out and leading
social change in own communities
• The deafening
silence and lack of voice of the Government following their
deaths in the capital city of New Zealand
• Call to
attention on the status of human rights of women and
children of ethnic minorities in New Zealand
• Raise
awareness on domestic violence amongst ethnic minorities in
Wellington
• Demand for sufficient resources and
funding to enable specialist organisations such as Shakti to
support vulnerable women and children victims in Asian,
African and Middle Eastern communities
Shakti has serviced over 400 counts of support to women and children based throughout the Wellington region alone, in the past 2 years. The organisation is a member of Shakti Community Council Inc, a national umbrella organisation specialising in domestic violence intervention and prevention for Asian, African and Middle Eastern communities since 1995. Shakti nationally runs 4 refuges, 8 centres nationwide and a 24/7 toll-free crisisline for ethnic victims 0800 SHAKTI.
Enough is enough!, will be the uninamous voice of the Wellington support group this evening as we grief over departed sisters in Wellington's ethnic community. The vigil will start from 6:30pm and close with candles lit ceremoniously symbolising hope for peace by 7:30pm.
