Housing Warrants of Fitness Great Step Forward

Housing Warrants of Fitness Great Step Forward

The Property Institute today acknowledged all hard working individuals, organisations and government bodies who have contributed to the launch of this year’s housing warrant of fitness trial program.

"It's a fact that New Zealand has more than its fair share of sub-standard housing" said Property Institute Chief Executive David Clark.

"We support any initiative to ensure that New Zealand's housing stock meets a minimum standard of habitability, and the warrant of fitness being trialed is a great step in the right direction.

The warrant of fitness trial is currently taking place in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and assesses a number of criteria including dryness, mould, sanitation, and state of repair.

"It is also important to acknowledge that New Zealand still does have a pressing need for low cost housing, and the standard set for the warrant of fitness needs be high enough to require improvement in the worst houses, while at the same time not being so high as to eliminate affordable rentals" said Mr Clark.

The Property Institute represents around two and a half thousand property professionals nationwide, including Registered Valuers, Property Managers, and Property Advisors.
