Constitution Conversation Report
Monday 9th December, 2013
For immediate release.
[Dominic Baron is the Constitutional Spokesperson for Better Democracy New Zealand.]
"The recently published Constitution Conversation Report does not address the most fundamental question: how the people of New Zealand can take back their sovereignty by creating a fully democratic constitution” says political lobby group Better Democracy New Zealand.
“Significantly, when making comparisons with the constitutions of other nations, the report makes reference to the obscure constitutions of Ecuador and Bolivia, but no reference whatsoever is made to the Swiss Federal Constitution, which is probably the best example of a democratic national constitution” says Dominic Baron, Constitutional Spokesman for Better Democracy New Zealand.
Mr Baron believes that New Zealand really does need to transform its political system into one that legitimately responds to the will of the people of New Zealand. Better Democracy New Zealand is recommending a Constitutional Convention be called at the earliest opportunity with the terms of reference being very clear and direct. It should focus on constructing our first democratic national constitution for New Zealand, based on the 1999 Constitution of the Swiss Confederation as the primary model.
“Ratification of our first fully democratic constitution would, of course, be by referendums of the people of New Zealand" says Mr Baron.
