International Labour Organisation visit next week an opportunity for Minister to seek advice
The visit to New Zealand early next week of new Regional Director Asia/Pacific for the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Mr Yoshiteru Uramoto is an opportunity for Minister of Labour, Simon Bridges, to seek advice on the compliance of his proposed changes to Employment Law with the ILO Conventions, CTU President Helen Kelly said.
"This is a unique opportunity for Mr Bridges to ensure New Zealand is not subject to the humiliation of a complaint because of a breach of our international obligations to the United Nations. We are sure the Minister will welcome that opportunity", Helen Kelly said.
The NZCTU has written to Mr Uramoto to brief him of its concerns with the law changes and will also meet him on Monday.
"The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment advice to the Minister is that the law changes are in breach of the Conventions and Treasury advice is they also breach the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act".
