Government must do more on Jobs
“With 245,400 people recorded as jobless in the latest Household Labour Force Survey there is no room for complacency on unemployment,” says Peter Conway, CTU Secretary.
“There are on-going redundancies, many regions, communities and families are struggling, unemployment remains persistently high, yet there is no sense of urgency from the Government to respond.”
Peter Conway said that the number of filled jobs has only recently climbed back to the level of December 2007 but since then, the working age population has grown by over 6 percent.
The Government should be revising procurement policies to support local industry, introducing more community employment schemes on socially and environmentally useful work, reinvigorating regional development, and scaling up investment in skills.
