Enrol Now For the Christchurch East By-Election

The Electoral Commission wants to make sure all eligible Christchurch East voters get the chance to have their say in the 30 November by-election.

“The by-election is to choose a new Member of Parliament to represent Christchurch East, so it’s important that everyone gets the information they need to take part,” says Glen Clark, Christchurch East Registrar of Electors.

“If you’re not sure whether you’re enrolled to vote, or which electorate you should enrol in, we’re here to help,” says Mr Clark.

“If you are outside Christchurch East temporarily, you can stay enrolled in the Christchurch East electorate and be eligible to vote in the by-election - for example, if your house is being repaired and you are waiting to move back in. But if you know you will not be returning, and have lived outside the Christchurch East electorate for more than one month, you should re-enrol at your new address.”

The Electoral Commission is also spreading the word that the Christchurch East by-election will be run using the same boundaries as the 2011 General Election.

The review of electorate boundaries that is happening at the moment will not affect the Christchurch East by-election. It will be contested using the same boundaries as the 2011 General Election.
“To take part, you must be enrolled to vote,” says Mr. Clark. “Do it now. It’s easy!”

Visit www.elections.org.nz, freetext your name and address to 3676, call 0800 36 76 56 or go to any PostShop to get an enrolment form. People can also check and update their details at www.elections.org.nz.
