The New Zealand Maori Internet Society (NZMIS) has welcomed David Cunliffe’s decision to take the Information and Communications portfolio, saying he has been a long time supporter of Māori ICT and community initiatives, while also having a lot of respect within the general ICT community.
Māori have been largely ignored in recent years with Māori ICT initiatives, with perhaps the most significant social/economic impacts for Māori being with the non-allocation of spectrum and the oversight of Māori communities with UFB and Fibre roll outs.
NZMIS spokesperson Karaitiana Taiuru said NZMIS are looking forward to again working with David Cunliffe and acknowledges the good work of the former ICT spokesperson Clare Curran.
