NewsTalk ZB debate cancelled
Wellington is a two-horse race for Mayor between the incumbent Celia Wade-Brown and long-serving councillor, former New
Zealand cricketer John Morrison.
But when the radio network endeavoured to give the front runners some quality one-on-one debate time at the Embassy
Theatre, the also-rans of Jack Yan and Karunanidhi Muthu kicked up a fuss.
This had the radio station getting pages of legal opinions as to the rights and wrongs of the matter and whether it was
fair or not. Newstalk eventually decided to change its mind and cancel the debate and instead run a head to head
interview in their studio.
Nicola Young was pragmatic and accepted the situation for what it was, while Rob Goulden was predictably incensed at not
being invited, but then changed his mind when he heard the Embassy debate had been cancelled and vented his spleen on
Yan and Muthu for being so outrageously litigious.
There were no cry-babies from the minor political parties when John Key went one-on-one with Phil Goff at the last
election.
