Asset Sales Referendum
It is now obvious that John Key is prepared to risk his chances in the general election next year. Like several prime
ministers before him, he fails to recognize that winning an election is not a mandate for everything in the manifesto.
Others have come unstuck by falling into this trap. It is still necessary to listen to the voice of the people. The
continuing clamour about opposing asset sales is a clear message that a referendum on this is essential before any
further sales.
The damage to the lives of so many people caused by the excessive electricity prices in the domestic sector will not be
repaired for years, if at all. New Zealand must now stop and review the electricity market and the way it is regulated.
If this government has any vestige of statesmanship they should put the sales on hold and review the whole situation.
The electricity market is not working and needs a complete overhaul. It is not a cash cow for inept governments to bail
themselves out of self inflected debt. Electricity is an essential service for everyone - Industry, commerce and the
domestic sector.
Prime Minister: listen to what the people are telling you. New Zealand’s unique constitution notwithstanding, democracy
demands that you listen to the people.
