Labour’s Te Kaunihera Māori endorses Shane Jones as the next leader of the New Zealand Labour Party
“Te Kaunihera Māori (TKM) unanimously agreed to endorse Shane Jones to become the next Leader of the Labour Party”, says Haare Williams, Senior Māori Vice-President of the New Zealand Labour Party.
“Recent changes to our Constitution has democratised the Labour Party voting process and TKM can see a real opportunity for Māori to meet their aspirations for political leadership.  We are collectively confident that Jones possesses the qualities to unite the Party and caucus, win the 2014 election and deliver a Labour-led Government”, says Williams.
“Labour needs a strong leader who represents and connects with all facets of the community. Jones is able to traverse te ao Māori and te ao Pākeha.  He has extensive knowledge of boardroom procedures and the business environment. He is known for his quick wit and abilities to debate in the house and lecture theatres. Jones also has an excellent command of Te Reo and English, and is well versed in Tikanga Māori - Māori practices and protocols.
“The Labour Party is representative of the rich diversity of New Zealanders. Because of this Labour has the appeal and vibrancy to deliver a better Aotearoa for everyone”.
“The last election had the lowest voter turnout in 100 years and we are confident Jones has the ability to inspire and motivate peoples throughout the ‘motu’ to participate in political decision making processes – In particular improve the turnout at the upcoming election”, says Williams.
“Labour’s Te Kaunihera Māori are encouraging all Labour Party members to participate in this democratic process”, says Williams.
