The Worst Humanitarian Disaster Since the End of the Cold War
The United Nations has officially declared the Syrian Crisis as “the worst humanitarian disaster since the end of the
cold war.” For over 2 years a bloody civil war has left over 100,000 people dead and more than 6.5 million people
homeless. More than half of these are children. In addition, about 1 million have fled to neighbouring countries. That’s
likely to treble by year-end. This disaster is playing out in a country only two-thirds the size of NZ.
While the politicians wring their hands and even suggest escalating the fighting, compassionate aid organisations are on
the ground in Syria helping as best they can. The guest this week In Conversation with Noel Cheer on Face Television is
Ian McInnes, CEO of the TEAR fund, a Christian aid organisation.
