Kerikeri Student Wins Family Violence DVD Song Competition
A 17-year-old Kerikeri High School student has won the song competition for a DVD that illustrates the harm caused by
family violence.
Summer Ash's song 'Enough is Enough' has been chosen as the theme music for the DVD that tells the story of people affected by family violence.
The Northland District Health Board, in conjunction with Northland Police and the 'It’s not OK' campaign, has developed
the DVD to increase awareness of the problem of family violence.
Whangärei/Kaipara Area Commander Inspector Tracy Phillips says the competition was held to encourage Northlanders to
produce a theme song that reinforced the messages through music.
“Entitled 'Enough Is Enough' the DVD uses the stories of Northlanders affected by family violence to emphasise the harm
caused by this crime to the family and the community”, says Ms Phillips.
The producers received five submissions from local musicians offering their work making it a very tough decision to
choose just one.
Manuel Springfield, Taaz Ydalastname, Cody Makaua, Summer Ash and Lisa Gordon all submitted their work for
consideration.
“All of the songs had merit and it was especially encouraging to receive purpose written material that focused on the
key messages”.
"Summer’s original lyrics reinforce the message that Northlanders will not accept family violence in their homes”.
Ms Phillips says the DVD also stresses that it is okay for people to ask for help when they are being beaten and
psychologically abused by family members they love in their own homes.
Due for public release this week the DVD will be distributed through Northland DHB, Police, Work and Income and
non-government agencies such as Family Works, Victim Support, Women's Refuge, Life Line, Salvation Army, and community
health and social providers.
