Saturday 24th August: The Koroneihana hui at Turangawaewae is a highlight of the Maori year, as people from not just Waikato Tainui but the rest of the motu come together to remember those who have passed, discuss the issues of the day and look forward to the year ahead. This year the focus was on rangatahi, with Whatumoana Paki stepping up to make the keynote speech while his father continues his recovery from illness. Potaka Maipi was in attendance and speaks to Eru Morgan about the hui and what the future holds for Tainui.
Sunday 25th August: Paedophile school teacher James Parker is starting a lengthy prison sentence, but the people of the small far north community of Pamapuria are facing an even longer sentence as they deal with the consequences of his offending against their children. Pamapuria’s eldest resident, Waireti Walters of Ngati Kahu, talks to Eru Morgan about Parker’s tainted legacy, why she thinks his sentence of preventative detention with a minimum seven years in prison was too light, and why she’d like to see the school renamed Te Ara Hou.
Korero Mai Ki Ahau a half hour features programme every Saturday and Sunday from noon, which takes an in-depth look at issues affecting te ao Maori. Totally in te reo Maori brought to you by Waatea News in association with Te Mangai Paho.
