Candlelight Vigil & Prayer for Egypt
Friday 23 August 2013, 6-7pm
Civic Square, Wellington
All people of good conscience are invited to join Muslims and Christians and gather in Civic Square on Friday evening
for a candlelight vigil and prayer service for those who have lost their lives in the Egyptian protests.
Egyptian Sheik Khaled will address the gathering and lead a Muslim prayer, while Father Gerard Burns will lead a
Christian prayer, in a united call for an end to the violent attacks.
UN High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay said last week, "The security forces in Egypt are bound by the
principle of the rule of law and must exercise their functions in full respect of human rights, including the right to
freedom of expression and peaceful assembly."
Egyptians Ahmed el-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, ex-vice president
for foreign affairs in Egypt's post-Morsi de facto government, also said more peaceful solutions should have been used
to end the pro-Morsi vigils.
As the violent repression and death-toll mounted, ElBaradei resigned from the military-backed de facto authority, saying
he refused to bear "the responsibility for a single drop of blood."
We invite all in Wellington to join us at Civic Square at 6pm on Friday 23 August to light a candle for the lives lost,
and join with Christians and Muslims to make a unified demand for an end to the violence in Egypt.
